S.League Player of the Year off to Japanese first division

S.League Player of the Year Atsushi Kawata will not be playing on these shores from next season onwards after he secured a move to Albirex Niigata in J-League One.

Kawata played for the club’s satellite team Albirex Niigata (S) in the S.League for the past two seasons, but excelled particularly in the 2016 season to earn a move back to Japan.

The 24-year-old marksman scored a total of 20 goals for the White Swans this season, a marked improvement from his decent return of 11 goals in 2015.

His performances not only allowed him to snag the S.League Player of the Year gong, but also helped Albirex to an unprecedented quadruple.

“We are pleased to announce that Atsushi Kawata has completed his transfer to Albirex Niigata (Japan),” the club said in a statement.

“We thank Kawata for his contribution to Albirex Niigata FC (Singapore) and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”
