S.League set for Feb 26 kick-off, Tampines to face Albirex at National Stadium

The 2017 S.League season is set to commence on February 26, with Tampines Rovers taking on Albirex Niigata (S) at the National Stadium.

There has been virtually no information forthcoming from the Football Association of Singapore about the new season, a matter of weeks before it had been expected to commence.

But two matches have finally been added to the schedule on the S.League website, with the opening game set to double up as the Charity Shield, which Albirex won last year after beating Brunei DPMM 3-2.

This will be the first S.League match to be held at the Sports Hub since its opening in 2014, although Tampines will feel fairly at home after hosting Selangor there last year in an AFC Cup fixture.

The expected season-opener will come five days after Tampines host Felda United in an AFC Cup match, which is likely to be at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Albirex are the league’s defending champions, while Tampines finished in second place last year.

The Stags will be looking to exact revenge on the White Swans after a 2-0 loss in the final game of the season, the RHB Singapore Cup final.
