Sundram retains previous squad, adds three names

Singapore interim head coach V.Sundramoorthy has retained the shape of the squad ahead of international friendly matches against Syria and Cambodia.

Those who were called up for the friendly against Malaysia and Hong Kong kept their places in the squad, while Shahdan Sulaiman, Shahfiq Ghani and Zaiful Nizam were added to the 28-man squad.

Singapore will travel to Doha, Qatar for a training camp before playing Syria in Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan on November 9.

The Lions’ AFF Suzuki Cup preparations will conclude with a match against Cambodia on home ground at Bishan Stadium on November 13. Singapore previously lost to Cambodia in July for the first time in 42 years in a 2-1 defeat.

Sundram will then have to make a decision over whom to cut from his provisional squad, as he will only be allowed to bring 23 players with him to the tournament.

“Since taking over the national team, we experimented with different playing formations and styles and also gave opportunities to many players to prove themselves at the international level to be included in the final 23-man squad for the competition,” Sundram said.

“The opponents in our upcoming friendly matches are strong in different aspects and they will provide a good test for our boys. At the same time, the centralised training camp over the next two weeks will allow us to further strengthen camaraderie in the team.

“After five months with the National Team, our boys are prepared for the AFF Suzuki Cup. We are grateful to the FAS ExCo and management for their fullest support towards our National Team’s requests and preparations for the Suzuki Cup.”
