Tampines concede late goal for third consecutive defeat

Tampines Rovers’ AFC Cup hopes hang by a thread as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Hanoi FC on Tuesday evening at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Stags had taken the lead through Yasir Hanapi in the 67th minute but Hanoi struck back through Nguyen Van Quyet and Pham Van Thanh to leave Tampines stuck on three points in the group stage.

The Stags will now have to win their remaining games and hope for results elsewhere to go their way in order to progress to the zone semi-finals. Only group winners and the best runner-ups will qualify for the next round.

Tampines are bottom in Group G, while Felda are third with four points. Ceres-Negros are second with five points while Hanoi go top with eight points.

Chances were few and far between in the game, with a draw being Hanoi’s main objective.

Van Quyet found the equaliser for Hanoi

Neither side were able to conjure up any real threats, although Mustafic Fahrudin saw his fifth-minute header deflected just wide of the post after meeting Shahdan Sulaiman’s corner.

The visitors had a good chance to open the scoring in the 40th minute after goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud was caught in no man’s land but Madhu Mohana managed to divert Nguyen Quang Hai’s goalbound shot away from goal.

Another opportunity came after the break in the 58th minute, when Van Quyet took a shot on the turn that beat Izwan, but not the woodwork.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute, as Shakir beat the offside trap and got to the byline before cutting back for Yasir to prod the ball in.

However, it took Hanoi only seven minutes to find the equaliser, with Van Quyet latching onto Pham Thanh Luong’s free-kick before drilling the ball past Izwan.

Hoang Vu Samson should have scored at the death after he ran down on goal and had only Izwan to beat but he curled his shot just wide of the bar.

His miss proved inconsequential though, as he turned provider and found Pham Van Thanh inside the box, before the latter slotted in the winner in injury time.
