Tardy calls up Gautam, Mahathir for Bahrain U21 friendly

Richard Tardy made several changes to the U21 squad he called up last time round, with Young Lions duo Hami Syahin and Joshua Pereira among those not selected while former Boavista SC’s playmaker Mahathir and Stags’ Gautam earned his nod...

Singapore national youth head coach Richard Tardy has called up several fresh faces for his Under-21 squad as they prepare to take on their Bahrain counterparts on Sunday, September 4.

Young Lions trio Hami Syahin, Joshua Pereira and Zharfan Rohaizad were among those previously called up by Tardy for the U21 International Challenge Cup held in July.

However, they and some others were released to the Under-19 side this time round, as they will be playing Bahrain U19 too on August 31 and September 3, in preparation for the September AFF U19 Championship, which they are slated to play a part in.

In their places, Young Lions goalkeeper Fashah Iskandar, unheralded Warriors midfielder Hafiz Sulaiman and most notably,  Tampines Rovers’ Gautam S/O Selvamany, have been called up.

Gautam featured frequently for Tampines in the recently-concluded League Cup, and his silky displays have caught the eyes of the national selectors.

Former Brazil club Boavista SC’s reserve trainee Mahathir Azeman may also don the nation’s colours, as the Home United midfielder was named in Tardy’s squad.

Mahathir was previously selected in Tardy’s provisional squad list for the International Challenge Cup held in July, but was ultimately cut from the final squad.

Another surprise call-up was Illyas Lee, a youngster currently unattached to any sides.
