UNICESS confirms Messi’s absence for Singapore game

Argentine captain Lionel Messi as well as two other big names will give Singapore a miss, international match promoter UNICESS has confirmed.

Gonzalo Higuain and Nicolas Otamendi are the two others who have been allowed to leave the squad, with all three players released due to personal reasons.

Argentina were slated to play Singapore on June 13 at the National Stadium, with Messi heavily touted as the headliner for the match.

However, reports of the Argentine’s no-show spreaded like wildfire just prior to Argentina’s trip to Singapore, with Messi reportedly keen to be excused in order to prepare for his wedding at the end of the month.

“Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Nicolas Otamendi will not feature in the Singapore Vs Argentina football match at the National Stadium on Tuesday, 13 June 2017,” UNICESS said in a press statement.

“While we share the disappointment of football fans in Singapore and elsewhere at the absence of these players, we still very much look forward to what will be an exciting football match against a team that will continue to feature a world class line-up of players.

“We very much hope that fans will enjoy this historical fixture and we encourage fans to show their support for the Lions at the National Stadium as they take on the No.2 ranked team in the world.”
