QUIZ! Name the players who remain with their original NWSL team from 2013
Diana Matheson was traded from the Washington Spirit to Seattle Reign FC this week, subtracting yet another name from the list of players who, dating back to the inaugural game, have spent the entirety of their time in the National Women’s Soccer League with one team. Let’s call them, “Club Lifers” (for now, anyway!).
The NWSL is approaching the start of its fifth season, and thus far, the fledgling league has shown us that no player – not even an international legend – is untradeable.
Combine the high-profile and frequent trades with early retirements, declined options, expansion drafts and stints abroad, and that leaves just 16 players who remain with the same team now as they were with on the opening day of the inaugural season in 2013. So we ask: Can you name them all?
First, some caveats: We’re talking about players who have been on the roster of the same team for the entirety of all four seasons and remain on that roster today. Going on loan to Australia, which plays in the NWSL offseason and does not conflict, is OK – no time missed. Going to play in Europe and missing half the NWSL season? That won’t land you on this list. Nor will being released by a team and missing half the season (which bumps one player off the list), skipping a season or returning to your original team via trade after leaving.
With all that in mind, we ask again: Can you name them all? Prove it in the quiz below. You have five minutes. Ready….GO!
