Carabao Cup Final: Preview
Manchester City and Arsenal meet at Wembley Stadium in what feels like a significant EFL Cup Final. The Premier League’s top two will cross paths again in the title race, but here there is the added edge of silverware and the chance to land a psychological blow.
The League Cup has not been kind to Arsenal. For all their success in the FA Cup, the Gunners have lost six of their past eight finals in this competition. Their most recent victory came in 1993, when Steve Morrow scored the winner against Sheffield Wednesday, a goal remembered as much for its painful aftermath as its importance.
This year Arsenal will look to end that trophyless run, and Mikel Arteta will be more than aware just how important a victory could be. His side haven't lost in their last six games against Man City and their stoic game plan could be perfect for a Wembley win.
Pep Guardiola’s early dominance of this competition has waned, yet City arrive intent on reclaiming the trophy. They will need to arrest a recent trend. They are winless in their past five league meetings with Arsenal, a stark contrast to the 13 victories they recorded in their first 14 encounters under the Catalan.
Arsenal come into the final on the back of European progress, having reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3–1 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen. City, by contrast, were comfortably eliminated by Real Madrid, a setback that sharpens the sense of urgency as they seek silverware at Wembley.
