The last Texas match of World Cup 2026 is the biggest and brightest of all. The Lone Star State had two stadiums in use this summer but a semi-final between two teams ranked in the top four and two recent world champions is a mouthwatering prospect.

France vs Spain: key information

France and Spain are not lone-star teams but glittering constellations. With England or Argentina poised on the other side of the draw, there will be no first-time winner this year. These two have the shining lights to give them the upper hand in the final.

Of course, one of them has to get there first. France have been sublime at times during this World Cup, emerging from the group stage as its joint-highest scorers and, more recently, looking like the team with the invaluable knack of always finding a goal.

Spain have almost stayed under the radar by comparison. Luis de la Fuente's side got their shock out of the way early in the form of a goalless draw against Cape Verde but have since seen off Uruguay, Austria and Belgium on their way to the final four.

Charles De Ketelaere's goal for the Red Devils, ultimately an equaliser in vain, was the only goal Unai Simón and Spain have conceded in the competition.

France vs Spain: World Cup 2026 Preview

As top-level UEFA rivals and historic football nations sharing a border, France and Spain are familiar to the point of intimacy.

They have met in 38 senior men's internationals, the equivalent of an entire Premier League season in which France have won 46 points and Spain 61, enough to have qualified for the Champions League last season.

France have won only four of the 13 matches between these teams since the turn of the century and lost the last two including the semi-final of the European Championship two years ago.

France and Spain have played one another six times in major tournaments. This is only the second in the World Cup and it arrives 20 years after the first.

At World Cup 2006, David Villa's penalty put Spain in front against France in the round of 16 but Franck Ribery, Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane scored for Les Bleus to keep Raymond Domenech's team on track for the final.

The race for the 2026 Golden Boot adds a little spice to what's left of the World Cup. Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi are both still involved along with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.

Mbappe and Messi have scored eight goals each and the French skipper is just one goal behind the all-time World Cup record scorer.

FourFourTwo's prediction

France 2-1 Spain

FourFourTwo isn't ready to call time on France's chances but they might need extra time to secure a third consecutive World Cup final.
