Spain and Uruguay occupy first and second in Group H as it stands, but Cape Verde are breathing down the South Americans' necks.

The Spaniards got off to a troubling start, held to a 0-0 draw by the island nation, but after beating Saudi Arabia convincingly, should take top spot in the group.

Meanwhile, Uruguay have disappointed their supporters with two draws against the group minnows and now must get something against the reigning European champions to guarantee their place in the next round.

Uruguay vs Spain predictions

Uruguay came into this World Cup out of form and out of sorts given there were reports of dressing room unrest.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it's easy to see how he might end up rubbing some players the wrong way.

That unrest has translated into two sub-par performances and results against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde - both of which are teams a nation such as Uruguay should be expected to beat.

Spain, on the other hand, found their groove against Saudi Arabia, and as many people's favourites to go on and win the whole thing, there is every chance they keep up the momentum against Bielsa's Uruguayans.

Should Spain, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal do what we all know they're capable of, this game could be out of sight pretty early on. If the scoreline climbs up and up in Spain's favour, do not be surprised to see Bielsa walk away from his post and coaching altogether.

Spain are too good for even the most well-drilled Uruguay side. After conceding twice to Cape Verde, Uruguay aren't exactly exhibiting defensive solidity this tournament, even if they were technically the more dangerous side in their previous game.

For that reason, it's looking like Spain to progress as Group H winners and Uruguay crossing their fingers that a draw will be enough to see them through, if they manage to keep the Spanish quiet.

  • Prediction: Spain 2-0 Uruguay
