Under the vastly experienced Sebastian Desabre, DR Congo have undergone a stunning transformation in the last four years. The Frenchman has instilled discipline in the side, with defensive solidity being at the heart of their improvement.
They arrived at the World Cup having kept eight clean sheets in 13 qualifiers and have proven to be extremely hard to break down, even by two sides with an array of attacking talent in Portugal and Colombia.
They may have struggled to create against the latter, but they showed against Portugal that they can be dangerous on the break. However, against Uzbekistan they will be expected to start on the front foot and dominate possession.
Perhaps its time for Desabre to take the shackles of his side and let them play with some freedom in attack. To do so, they’ll need big performances from veteran striker Cedric Bakambu and Newcastle forward Yoann Wissa.
Beaten 2-0 by Canada and 2-1 by the Netherlands in their final World Cup warm-up games, things have got even worse in the tournament for the White Wolves. Brushed aside by Colombia, Uzbekistan were completely outclassed in the 5-0 defeat by Portugal.
Despite these results, they have the faintest hope of progressing to the last 32 if they can conjure up a first-ever World Cup win against DR Congo. It seems unlikely, but there have been far bigger upsets at this tournament already.
