Germany and Paraguay meet in the World Cup 2026 round of 32, as Boston's Gillette Stadium welcomes the 2014 World Cup winners as they take on the defence-first Albirroja, who finished third in Group D.

Germany vs Paraguay: key information

Germany and Paraguay have met once before at the World Cup, back in in 2002. Oliver Neuville scored the only goal in the first knockout round, in South Korea. The only other encounter came in 2013, when current Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer played in a 3-3 draw in Kaiserslautern.

Recently un-retired Neuer was poor in Die Mannschaft's final group game, a 2-1 loss to Ecuador, in which Germany were already through.

This one matters. The prize of an Independence Day encounter with France or Sweden awaits the winner.

Germany vs Paraguay: World Cup 2026 Preview

Paraguay's path to the round of 32 was anything but smooth. The Albirroja were relatively comfortable CONMEBOL qualifiers but got a kicking in their opener against the United States. Miguel Almiron's controversial booking set the tone for a strange tournament.

The former Newcastle forward was yellow-carded after a very dubious use of 'mistaken identity' in the first game. In the second, he became the first footballer to be sent off for covering his mouth during a verbal confrontation with an opponent.

Paraguay already had the lead against Turkey that day. Ultimately, their ability to hold on to that 1-0 advantage is what took them through in third place with four points.

Germany are favourites despite the loss against Ecuador and it's not even close. The pressure, the expectations, are squarely focused on Julian Nagelsmann's men.

Their predecessors are four-time World Cup winners but the current generation certainly have plenty left to prove after going out in the group stage in each of the past two tournaments.

With a pair of disappointing European Championships under their belts in 2021 and 2024, the Germans know that knocking Paraguay out of the World Cup must be just the start of their achievements this summer.

Nobody will be more aware of that reality than their opponents.

FourFourTwo's prediction

Germany 2-0 Paraguay

FourFourTwo predicts a round of 32 match in Boston that goes with the FIFA World Rankings in relatively unfussy fashion.
