Trouble started in the second half of Saturday's Carioca (Rio de Janeiro state) championship match between Boavista and Botafogo when a header from visiting striker Alessandro ended up in the net.
Botafogo players celebrated and a goal was given but television replays clearly showed the ball had hit the ground wide of the goal and bounced in through a hole in the side.
Boavista players protested but, after several minutes of consultations, the referee again pointed to the centre circle.
The protests continued, the referee and linesman consulted again for another three minutes and the goal was eventually confirmed for a second time.
As Boavista players refused to re-start the game, there were more deliberations and the referee finally back-tracked and awarded a goal kick.
Botafogo coach Ney Franco later suggested that officials had used television evidence -- which they are not allowed to do under the rules of the game -- to make their decision.
"A person who was in one of the television cabins came down and spoke to the officials," Franco told reporters. "That's why the goal was disallowed."
Botafogo eventually won 2-1 with an injury-time goal by Maicosuel, his second of the game.
Palmeiras striker Kerrison, seen as one of the major signings of the 2009 season after he joined from Coritiba, scored twice, the first from a penalty, in their 3-0 win over Mogi Mirim in the Paulista championship.
Cleiton Xavier scored the other goal to give Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team their second straight win of the new season.
