United weighing up Neuer move

Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be keen on recruiting a new stopper, with No.1 Edwin Van der Saar currently sidelined for two months, while the performances of both deputies Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak have done little to convince the Scot that they are viable long-term options.

Neuer has made 88 league appearances for Schalke since breaking onto the first team scene in 2005, and won his first international cap with Germany this year against the United Arab Emirates.

The 23-year-old was expected to complete a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich this summer, only for the move to eventually collapse due to Schalke's lofty valuation of the glove-man.

However, Old Trafford supremo Sir Alex is thought to be ready to splash the cash on the stopper, with Schalke believed to want a fee in the region of €20 million for the youngster.
