This Sunday sees two teams with managers who have emotional attachment to their clubs, but whose fans have increasingly less emotional attachment towards their managers.
Newcastle’s last outing was a risible 5-0 defeat to Leicester – with Steve Bruce’s description of his own side’s performance as a “surrender”, if anything, putting a positive spin on the match.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are coming off the back of what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called “a good point” away against AZ Alkmaar, having failed to record a single shot on target.
This weekend’s match at St James’s Park, while unlikely to be a show of attractive football, will nevertheless be must-watch television for fans of slow-unfolding car crashes. It’s a far cry from this fixture in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the sides would regularly throw up plenty of goals – and even appeared against each other in an FA Cup final.
This quiz won’t take you back that far – just the last decade – but still tracks a decline of these two teams.
