The Italians have been giants of European football from the very beginning. They won two of the three first World Cup titles, after all.
They've been hugely successful too since, lifting the trophy in 1982 and 2006 again. And in recent times in the European Championship, silverware had evaded Italy - despite the team coming mighty close - until this summer.
In 2000, France's World Cup winners managed to sneak in a golden goal to sink the men in blue; 12 years later, Spain - who were also world champions at the time - romped to a four-goal victory over a tired-looking Azzurri. It was a penalty shootout that secured the Euros for them over the summer.

FourFourTwo was launched in 1994 on the back of a World Cup that England hadn’t even qualified for. It was an act of madness… but it somehow worked out. Our mission is to offer our intelligent, international audience access to the game’s biggest names, insightful analysis... and a bit of a giggle. We unashamedly love this game and we hope that our coverage reflects that.
