Swansea will be looking to continue their promotion push when they face Barnsley on Saturday evening.
Swansea have taken 10 points from the last 12 available and are now just four points adrift of Championship leaders Norwich. Steve Cooper’s side finished sixth last season and were beaten in the semi-finals of the play-offs, but the evidence of the first half of this campaign suggests Swansea are among the leading contenders for automatic promotion this time around.
The Swans have been particularly impressive at the back. With only 13 goals conceded, they have by far the best defensive record in the division. The Tykes are looking up the table despite a 1-0 loss to Norwich last time out. Valerien Ismael has done an excellent job since his appointment in October, dragging Barnsley clear of the relegation zone and into the top half of the table. Prior to that defeat by Norwich, Ismael’s side had won five of their previous six games (that was a 2-0 reverse against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium) and the club’s fans are now starting to dream of a place in the play-offs.
Steven Benda picked up a long-term ankle injury in a recent training session and will miss out for Swansea here, with Cooper keen to sign a replacement goalkeeper this month. Morgan Gibbs-White and Kasey Palmer have returned to their parent clubs after loan spells, while Kyle Naughton and Ryan Bennett are out injured.
Barnsley will be unable to call upon the services of Aopo Halme, Ben Williams and Jordan Williams, all of whom are nursing various injury problems.
