The Amex Stadium will play host to an all-south coast clash three days after Brighton slipped to a 3-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League.
Despite the scoreline the Seagulls turned in a promising performance on Monday. On another day they could easily have taken something from the game, and Graham Potter will have been pleased by many elements of his team’s display.
The Brighton boss will now turn his attention to the League Cup, with Portsmouth set to make the 50-mile trip east on Thursday.
Like every bottom-half Premier League club, Brighton’s overriding objective this term will be to retain their place at the top table. Domestic cup competitions might be even less of a priority given the truncated nature of the 2020/21 campaign.
Adam Lallana will definitely play no part after sustaining an injury on debut against Chelsea, with Pascal Gross likely to replace him in the starting XI.
Jason Steele, Joel Veltman, Dan Burn, Dale Stephens, Aaron Connolly and Alireza Jahanbakhsh are also in line to feature from the first whistle.
Portsmouth, whose last meeting with Brighton was a 2-0 loss in the Championship back in 2012, drew 0-0 with Shrewsbury at the weekend.
Kenny Jackett will be targeting promotion back to the second tier this season, and he may also ring the changes from the Shrewsbury stalemate.
The Pompey boss will stick with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, with Michael Jacobs, Ryan Willians, Ben Close and Andrew Cannon hoping to be included in the XI.
Brighton will look to dominate the ball on Thursday, and Potter will be expecting improvements in their possession game this term after a transitional season last time out.
The Seagulls are understandably favourites to come out on top, but Portsmouth look well placed to take advantage if complacency creeps in.
