Three players could win their first caps for England over the next few days, as coach Gareth Southgate looks to bring in some new blood.
Tyrone Mings has got his first ever call-up, while James Maddison and Mason Mount have previously been included in Three Lions squads without appearing. Aston Villa’s Mings and Chelsea’s Mount were both playing in the Championship last season, and have 25 Premier League appearances between them (the former has 21 of those).
Kyle Walker, meanwhile, has been left out in the cold. Well, it’s set to be 17 degrees in Manchester on Saturday, but you know what we mean.
In days gone by, they could all have been playing together on weeks like this, however. The England B team (RIP) has been defunct since 2007, but was once a chance for both big names in poor international form and inexperienced up-and-comers to make their mark.
That’s why the last two games England B played, against Albania under Steve McClaren in 2007 and Belarus under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006, featured far more familiar names than you might think. Looking at the line-ups now, the vast majority had pretty stellar international careers – well, maybe not, but they won a lot of caps.
We’ve put together every player who appeared in those two matches, including a surprising three goalkeepers (don’t ask).
