The annual clash between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League takes place in the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Thursday.
Little over a month has passed since Bayern saw off PSG in Lisbon to clinch European football’s most coveted prize, but they already have a chance to lift more silverware. Judging by what happened on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season, standards haven’t slipped much in the interim.
The German champions smashed Schalke 8-0 in Munich, with Serge Gnabry netting a hat-trick and former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane grabbing a debut goal. Sevilla, who defeated Inter Milan 3-2 in the Europa League final on 21 August, are yet to get their domestic season underway in La Liga.
The showcase clash will also be significant for the fact that supporters will be allowed to attend, with a third of the 67,000-seater stadium open to the public.
It is the first major European match to involve fans since te Covid-19 restrictions began, and the Hungarian government have insisted that it will be safe to attend after imposing strict hygiene and distancing measures.
Both sides have only won one previous UEFA Super Cup, Bayern in 2013 and Sevilla in 2006.
The Germans are set to welcome back Alphonso Davies from injury after he missed the weekend hammering of Schalke, but Kingsley Coman - scorer of the crucial goal against PSG - and new signing Tanguy Nianzou are doubtful. For Sevilla, the major team news is likely to be the inclusion of new arrival Ivan Rakitic, who will make his second debut for the club, having returned this summer after six years with Barcelona.
Something will have to give for two teams who are enjoying incredible runs of form. Hansi Flick’s Treble-winning side are unbeaten in 31 matches, but Julien Lopetegui’s charges are on a 21-match unbeaten run of their own.
