Casemiro believes that 'bitterness' was behind Jamie Carragher's public attack on him.

The outgoing Manchester United midfielder was singled out by the former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports pundit in May 2024 amid a dire run under Erik ten Hag.

“I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level," Carragher said at the time.

"The next two league games and the cup final, then he should be thinking, I need to go to the MLS or Saudi. This has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time.

"I always remember the saying 'leave the football before the football leaves you'. The football has left him. At this top level, he needs to call it a day at this level and move.

"The level of that player, he should not be putting himself through this. He is too good of a player to be putting in a performance like that being laughed at by Crystal Palace. He needs to call it a day."

But Casemiro has enjoyed a renaissance with the Red Devils despite a turnover of three managers since Carragher's barb, which he claims contained a hidden motive.

The Brazil international believes the remarks were borne from the fact that he was part of a Real Madrid side which defeated Liverpool in two Champions League finals.

“Everyone says whatever they want on television," Casemiro told TNT Sports Brazil.

"I’m not someone who gets involved in that. But it’s a bit normal, because I won two Champions League titles over his team.

"Maybe after you win two titles against his club, there’s still some bitterness there."

Casemiro is set to bow out from United this summer and will do so having already eclipsed his highest goal tally in a single season for the club with nine to date.
