Former Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson is the bookmakers' favourite to land the vacant Portsmouth position, and could go head-to-head with his father, Sir Alex Ferguson, in his first game against Manchester United this Saturday.
The Fratton Park outfit announced that Paul Hart had left the club on Tuesday evening, with the 56-year-old having guided Pompey to Premier League survival last season.
However, the former Nottingham Forest boss endured a torrid start to the 2009/10 campaign, seeing Portsmouth lose all of their opening seven league fixtures following a summer dominated by boardroom uncertainty and the sales of stars including Peter Crouch, Glen Johnson and Sylvain Distin.
Darren Ferguson, who steered The Posh to back-to-back promotions from Leagues One and Two in 2007 and 2008, failed to repeat the trick this season, leaving the club on November 9 with the London Road side bottom of the Championship table.
The 37-year-old has been linked with the Hull City job.
However, following Hart's departure from Portsmouth on Tuesday, the Scot has instantly been installed as the favourite for the Fratton Park post.
Pompey host Premier League champions Manchester United - managed by Darren's father Sir Alex - on Saturday.comments
