Arsenal will be looking for their third consecutive win in the Premier League when they take on West Brom on Saturday.
The Gunners have eased the pressure on Mikel Arteta this week, beating Chelsea 3-1 last Sunday before overcoming Brighton by a goal to nil in midweek. Arsenal remain in the bottom half of the table and have still had a disappointing season to date, but back-to-back victories has seen some of the optimism return to the Emirates Stadium. However, it is too early to assert that Arteta’s side have turned a corner and defeat at The Hawthorns could see them drop back down to 15th place if other results go against them.
West Brom eked out a creditable 1-1 draw with Liverpool in their first post-Christmas fixture, but a 5-0 thumping by Leeds on Tuesday brought them back down to earth with a thud. The Baggies were outclassed by Marcelo Bielsa’s men, and the nature of that defeat underlined the size of the task confronting Sam Allardyce this term. West Brom have still only won one of their 16 games and have now conceded a league-high 35 goals. This may yet be Allardyce’s toughest survival mission yet.
Arsenal will again have to make do without Gabriel after he returned a positive test for COVID-19. Alexander Lacazette could come in for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up front, while David Luiz and Willian should be available again. However, Thomas Partey is still sidelined and Bukayo Saka will need to be assessed.
West Brom will be unable to call upon the services of Jake Livermore, who is suspended for another match following his recent red card. Romaine Sawyers will therefore keep his place in holding midfield, with Matt Phillips likely to continue in a previously unfamiliar central role. Conor Townsend, Hal Robson-Kanu and Kyle Bartley are also out, but Kieran Gibbs could return.
