The Puskas Award was launched in 2009 to hail the year’s most spectacular strike, with former winners including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Bale, whose overhead kick settled May’s Champions League final against Liverpool, was widely tipped to scoop the latest accolade despite then-Real Madrid team-mate Ronaldo scoring an equally astonishing goal against future employers Juventus.
