Liverpool boss Arne Slot has confirmed Alexander Isak's return to full training with the rest of the squad.

The big-money summer arrival from Newcastle United injured his ankle and fractured his fibula in the course of scoring the opening goal in Liverpool's 2-1 win away to Tottenham in December.

Isak has been in individual training in recent weeks and is now ready to join his teammate in team training ahead of Saturday lunchtime's trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Slot has naturally cautioned that Isak will obviously not be able to start games straight away, but believes his return could be a significant boost to the side as they vie to secure a top five finish as well as trying to stay active in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Slot told the club's official website: "I think Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup - and apart from that, he's going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow.

"If you've worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that's, for everyone, very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place."

"Of course, it's only his first session, after three or four months [out], with the team but it's good to have him back because we all know who we signed and we've signed an incredible striker.

"So to have him again in a team that's usually generating quite a lot of chances – and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start – but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us."

Slot is meanwhile 'confident' that Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa will be available on Saturday after both had to withdraw from their respective national teams for the international break.

Both players have been back in training this week in a bid to be ready for the FA Cup.

Jeremie Frimpong's participation is, however, in doubt after being forced off injured during the Netherlands' draw with Ecuador on Tuesday night. The wide man has had a scan and will be assessed ahead of the City game.

Giorgi Mamardashvili is likely to continue in goal with Alisson still out injured.
