England's Jarell Quansah handed TWO game ban for Mexico red card

Jarell Quansah has been suspended for England's next two matches after receiving a red card in his side's World Cup round-of-16 win over Mexico.

A FIFA statement on Thursday confirmed that Quansah will miss the upcoming quarter-final against Norway and then a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland should England make it through in Miami.

Days after Donald Trump intervened to give US striker Folarin Balogun a lifeline, no such mercy has been granted for England defender Quansah, who was dismissed following a reckless challenge during the Three Lions' 3-2 win at the Azteca.

Red cards automatically lead to a one-match suspension at the World Cup, but FIFA can extend bans as they sees fit.

The England defender was sent off for serious foul play after a high and late tackle on Jesus Gallardo shortly after half time in England’s 3-2 win at the Azteca on Sunday.

The news will be a blow to Thomas Tuchel and England, especially after the US president controversially intervened in USMNT striker Balogun’s Round of 16 suspension with a phone call to FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, managing to get the one-match ban suspended for 12 months utilising a clause never before used at the World Cup.

It drew much criticism globally – including from UEFA and the Belgian FA, with the Red Devils winning the following match in any case – but it also opened the floodgates to further such appeals.

Based on various reports, the Football Association (FA) were considering an appeal to Quansah’s red card.
