Spain World Cup 2026 squad: Luis de la Fuente's latest selection ahead of the World Cup draw

The Spain World Cup 2026 squad is edging ever closer.

World Cup 2026 is fast approaching and as the tournament squads start to take shape, it's becoming increasingly clear that Luis de la Fuente's side and their iconic 4-3-3 are one of the favourites for another international trophy, having wiped the floor with just about everyone at Euro 2024.

La Roja haven't actually won a knockout fixture since they lifted the trophy back in 2010 – and despite a 7-0 mauling of Costa Rica to begin their 2022 campaign, they whimpered out without so much as scoring in the shootout against Morocco – but it's safe to say that the odds of that happening again are incredibly low indeed.

Tiki-taka is dead, as is the Real Madrid-Barcelona duopoly that dominated the national side: long live a high-intensity style characterised, yes, by La Masia graduates, but spanning the continent, with some of the best Spanish players of 2026 plying their trade in the Premier League, coming from the Basque Country and finding leftfield ways to the very top.

Posterboy Lamine Yamal is back in this squad, of course, joined by Barça team-mates Pedri, Pau Cubarsi, Joan Garcia – in line for a first cap – and Dani Olmo, whose path took him via Croatia and the Red Bull set-up before he starred at the Euros: and that core of De La Fuente's group are joined by first-time call-ups in Arsenal's Cristhian Mosquera and Real Sociedad's Ander Barrenetxea, as well as Prem faces past and present in Pablo Fornals, Yeremy Pino and Pedro Porro.

There's still plenty to be decided between now and June: Mikel Merino is hopeful of winning his race to recover from injury, captain Alvaro Morata and superstar winger Nico Williams both haven't made the squad this time, while a trio of starlets in Samu Aghehowa, Pablo Barrios and Jesus Rodriguez have all missed out on March's internationals – and a vital opportunity to stake a claim in this team.

The Spanish take on Serbia in Villarreal after Lusail's Finalissima contest against Argentina was cancelled before hosting a friendly with Egypt in Catalonia: here's hoping they wear their gorgeous new away kit.

Manager

Who is Spain's manager?

Luis de la Fuente has spent the last 12 years in the Spanish national team set up, leading the under-19, under-21 and the under-23 Olympic sides, before being given the reins to the senior side in 2022.

His side were incredible at the 2024 European Championships, with a blend of youth and experience ensuring they won the competition for the fourth time.

The time he spent around the youth sides has allowed him to bring several players with him into the first team.

Star player

Who is Spain's star player?

Lamine Yamal is already a serial winner. He won two league titles, a Copa del Rey and a European Championship all before his 18th birthday, and was ranked second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or.

At Euro 2024 he registered four assists and scored once in seven games. His goal came in the semi-final and was arguably goal of the tournament beating Mike Maignan from 30 yards out.

He is ranked at no.1 in FourFourTwo's list of the best right wingers in the world right now and will be looking to improve his already impressive career with a World Cup win just after he turns 19 in July 2026.
