Betis sack Chaparro as relegation battle looms

MADRID - Real Betis have sacked coach Paco Chaparro and promoted Jose Maria Nogues in his place until the end of the season, the Primera Liga club said on their website.

The decision, taken late on Monday, came after a 3-3 home draw with fellow strugglers Numancia on Saturday left Betis a point above the relegation places in 16th with nine games left to play.

Chaparro, 66, had been at the helm since he stepped up from the B team to replace Hector Cuper in December 2007 for his second spell in charge, but Saturday's result was their seventh game in a row without a win.

Nogues moves from the B team to take charge on Tuesday and his first match will be away to Racing Santander next weekend.
