Petrov: Delph destined for greatness

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has backed new signing Fabian Delph to become one of the best players in England.

Martin O'Neill's men won the race to sign the Leeds United starlet for around £8 million this summer, thwarting efforts from Premier League rivals Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

And although the England U21 international struggled to shine on his debut against Wigan Athletic at the weekend, in which the youngster was booked in Villa's 2-0 home defeat, Petrov believes the ex-Bradford City starlet can go on to achieve greatness.

“I’m convinced Fabian is going to become one of the best players in the country," he told the club's official website.

“He’s an exceptional player, a great talent who has been clearly determined to make an impact straight away.

“He’s only 19, so a lot of people are talking about him being one for the future, but I reckon he will be desperate to keep hold of his first team spot as the season progresses.”
