Liverpool will be looking to reestablish their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with victory over Southampton on Monday.
Manchester United moved level on points with the defending champions on New Year’s Day, leaving the Reds in first place on goal difference alone. Jurgen Klopp would have been hoping that his side would open up a healthy cushion at the summit of the standings following their recent 2-1 victory over Tottenham, but back-to-back draws with West Brom and Newcastle has allowed United and others to close the gap. Liverpool will be desperate to return to winning ways at St Mary’s ahead of what could be a pivotal clash with Manchester United later this month.
Southampton also go into this game on the back of two draws, having been held to scoreless stalemates by both Fulham and West Ham over the festive period. Saints have slipped down the table as a consequence - they were as high as third just three weeks ago - but will still be pleased with the way they have started the campaign, particularly in comparison to the first half of last season. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have failed to score in each of their last three matches, but the return to fitness of Danny Ings will increase their firepower in the final third.
Summer signing Thiago Alcantara made his return from a two-month lay-off against Newcastle and could start for Liverpool here. Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are long-term absentees in the centre of defence, while Joel Matip, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota are also out.
Southampton will once again have to make do without Jannik Vestergaard and Nathan Redmond, but Ings will start against his former club after making his comeback against West Ham last Tuesday. Hasenhuttl will stick with his tried and trusted 4-2-2-2 formation as Southampton seek their eighth win of the campaign.
