Canada and Qatar each picked up their first World Cup points and now meet each other in Vancouver in Group B at the World Cup 2026 seeking a maiden tournament victory. Arguably the tightest group remains wide open, with all four teams on one point.

Canada vs Qatar: key information

Having fallen behind against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada grabbed a deserved 78th-minute equaliser to earn that first tournament point, at the seventh attempt. Some 121 seconds after coming off the bench, Cyle Larin did the damage, but Jesse Marsch will be after a win as the co-hosts try to make the knockouts.

Qatar left it even later to earn their maiden point when in the 95th minute centre-back Boualem Khoukhi (with the help of of Milo Muheim) met Homam El Amin's cross with a thumping header to take full advantage of Switzerland’s profligacy in front of goal. That sparked wild celebrations, so imagine what would happen if they record a first World Cup win?

Canada vs Qatar: World Cup 2026 Preview

Heading into their opening fixture, expectations were high that Canada could not only gain a first-ever World Cup victory but possibly advance beyond the group stage. Having lost all three games in 1986 and then again in 2022, they got off to the worst possible start when conceding in the 21st minute.

However, Jesse Marsch’s side showed plenty of composure as they carved out several chances, with Stephen Eustaquio, Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi all spurning good opportunities.

They were rewarded for all their hard work when Larin came off the bench to equalise and the recently signed Southampton forward may well start ahead of Oluwaseyi against Qatar.

After a trio of disappointing performances at home four years ago, there was finally something for the Qatar players and fans to celebrate after they snatched the most unlikely of points against the Swiss.

Outclassed for huge periods of the game, they hung in there and took their one chance when it arrived, much to the delight of manager Julen Lopetegui. “We were a little bit lucky sometimes but you need to believe and work to have a little bit of luck in life and in sport,” he said. “So we are very happy for the players."

Qatar will be riding high on the back of that result but cannot expect Canada to be as generous and will have to deliver a much-improved performance if they hope to record their first-ever World Cup win.
