Tunisia vs Japan is a World Cup 2026 fixture between two Group F teams that, though winless after their opening games, delivered vastly contrasting performances.

A win for the Samurai Blue will put them in prime position to reach the knockout stages for for the third successive tournament, while the Eagles of Carthage badly need a morale-boosting display under their second manager of the tournament. Yes, already.

Tunisia vs Japan: key information

Tunisia became the third team in World Cup history – after themselves and South Korea, both at France 98 – to sack their manager mid-tournament, when dismissing Sabri Lamouchi after a 5-1 defeat by Sweden. In has come cult hero Johnny Bravo lookalike Herve Renard, whose tenure as emergency head coach begins with a tricky-looking encounter.

Japan earned a spirited point against the Netherlands thanks to Daichi Kamada's late header and looked typically busy, technically excellent and full of verve. Holding the Dutch to an entertaining 2-2 draw was a solid base for Samurai Blue to build from, with plenty of well-established names on show.

Tunisia vs Japan: World Cup 2026 Preview

Tunisia got off to the worst possible start after Sweden showed no mercy with a big 5-1 win in their opening game in Group F.

Technical director Mondher Kebaier was rumoured to take the reins, but the African side has since appointed 57-year-old Frenchman Renard, who is now managing at his third successive World Cup after past spells with Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Tunisia began in a 3-5-2 formation against the Swedes under Lamouchi, but new boss Renard may consider switching to a back four with Omar Rekik and Montassar Talbi starting as his central defensive partnership.

Regarded by many as dark horses at this summer’s tournament, Japan came from behind twice to earn a point against Ronald Koeman's Netherlands.

Keito Nakamura’s low strike from the edge of the area and Crystal Palace man Daichi Kamada's header were impressive in their own right, with Hajime Moriyasu rightfully pleased with his side.

Ranked 17th in the world by FIFA, Japan have won five of their previous six encounters with Tunisia, most recently beating them 2-0 in a friendly held in Kobe in October 2023.
