World Cup 2026 will continue beyond the group stage for the eight best third-placed teams and, for some, that puts a great deal of focus on the opening fixture.
Sweden vs Tunisia comes is one of those games. A draw would leave both needing to beat Japan and the Netherlands while a win puts one team a single point away from all but guaranteeing progress.
Tunisia cruised through Africa's qualification campaign, winning nine matches and losing one to finish 13 points clear in their group.
Sweden had to work rather harder for their place. They earned a play-off spot through the Nations League and it's just as well – they picked up just two points in qualifying. Under Graham Potter, they made the most of the reprieve.

Sweden vs Tunisia: World Cup 2026 Preview
Sweden were fired into the World Cup by Viktor Gyokeres, who scored two minutes from time in their play-off final against Poland. They knocked Ukraine out along the way.
These teams haven't met for 23 years and never competitively. Neither has ever scored more than one goal against the other and Tunisia's only win was in the most recent of four friendlies.
Neither Sweden nor Tunisia arrive at Estadio BBVA in the best of form. Sabri Lamouchi's team lost both of their June friendlies without scoring a goal, shipping five goals against Belgium last time out.
Sweden were beaten 3-1 by Norway in Oslo at the start of the month and drew with Greece at home before heading to their World Cup base in Frisco, Texas.
Tunisia are looking to take their World Cup beyond the group stage for the first time. Their first opponents are regulars in the knock-out rounds and haven't failed to get out of the group at a World Cup since 1990, but they return to the world stage this summer after missing out on qualification four years ago.
Sweden vs Tunisia: Group F
FourFourTwo's prediction
Sweden 2-2 Tunisia
Sweden have a goal or two in them but they can be a little leaky at the back. FourFourTwo is staying on the fence for this one.
