Misimovic out of Portugal play-off

ZENICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina - VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic will miss the return leg of Bosnia's World Cup play-off against Portugal on Wednesday with a knee injury, coach Miroslav Blazevic said.

Portugal take a 1-0 lead into the cauldron of Zenica's Bilino Polje stadium and are favourites to go through, with Bosnia missing three other key players through suspension.

Misimovic limped off midway through Tuesday's training and Blazevic said he would replace the influential playmaker with uncapped Haris Medunjanin, who was last week cleared by FIFA to change his football nationality and play for Bosnia.

"Misimovic is unfit to play on Wednesday. He received a knock in the first leg in Lisbon and Medunjanin will replace him," Blazevic told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I can guarantee that we will play our hearts out to accomplish what might seem like an impossible mission. It wouldn't be the first time that a more determined team got the better of a more heralded one."

Bosnia finished second in Group Five behind European champions Spain to reach the play-offs.

If they qualify for next year's finals in South Africa it would be the first time they had reached a major tournament as an independent nation.
