Shawcross handed first England call
LONDON - Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross was handed his first call up to the England squad on Saturday evening, just hours after being sent off for a tackle which lead to Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey sustaining what looked a serious injury.
Also included in the squad for Wednesday's friendly with Egypt are left backs Leighton Baines of Everton and Stephen Warnock of Aston Villa - both of whom will be looking to stake a claim to a World Cup place, with Ashley Cole currently injured and Wayne Bridge ruling himself out of the running following his much-publicised dispute with Chelsea's John Terry.
There are also recalls for Arsenal's Theo Walcott, West Ham's Carlton Cole and Stewart Downing of Aston Villa.
There is no place, however, for Fulham striker Bobby Zamora, who had been tipped for a first call-up to the senior side after scoring 15 goals in 33 matches so far this season.
The 29-year-old's place was left in doubt after Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson revealed he had to be withdrawn from Thursday's draw at Shakhtar Dontesk with an Achilles injury.
Wednesday's match at Wembley will be England's last official warm-up match before Capello names his provisional squad in May for the World Cup finals.
