DECEMBERAnother month in la Liga began with Spain more than a little freaked out by the memory of a chastened, crestfallen José Mourinho admitting that the better side won a game of football, without a single excuse or rant being deployed in the process. That was Mourinho’s response from Real Madrid's Camp Nou thrashing by Barcelona at the end of November, and was downright disturbing.

It was the first major tournament on these isles in 30 years: you may recall that football was "coming home". The then FourFourTwo editor Paul Simpson set out to watch it with the fans…Can't cross. Can’t take a free-kick to save their lives. Always giving away free-kicks just outside the box. Can’t get a corner in the box and away from the keeper. This isn’t an assassination of any particular footballer, just an all-too-accurate description of too many of the teams who competed in the football fest that was Euro 96.

Leonardo always maintained that he didn't see his future as a coach, but how about president of a major club? That could well be the urbane Brazilian’s destiny, but for now he'll have to make do with being chief executive at Paris St Germain. Not a bad turn of events for a man who had to put up with Silvio Berlusconi’s meddling and Rino Gattuso’s bitterness – followed by unrelenting scorn from half a city when he became coach of Inter in January.
