Struggling Nuremberg sack Oenning

BERLIN - Nuremberg have sacked coach Michael Oenning with the promoted side deep in the Bundesliga relegation zone, the club said on Monday.

"After long discussions and analysis we have decided to part ways with our coach Michael Oenning," club president Franz Schaefer told reporters.

"This step saddens us because we did not plan to change our coach but to stay in the Bundesliga (with him in charge)," he said.

Oenning took over in 2008, steering the team into the top division in his first season, but has seen Nuremberg lose their last four games without scoring a goal.

They are second from bottom with 12 points from 17 games after losing 3-0 at Cologne on Sunday.

The club said his successor will be appointed "in the coming days".
