If you already knew the name Julian Quinones a month ago, give yourself a pat on the back.

So often, the World Cup serves as a parade of already-familiar names parading around the pitch. Brazil have forwards who play for Bournemouth and Brentford, for goodness sake.

But occasionally, that sense of mystique from bygone years is restored - and unless you have spent the past few years keeping a close eye on Mexican or Saudi football, chances are that Quinones had escaped your radar.

Quinones was born and raised in Colombia, but a prolific youth campaign for Paz caught the eye of Mexican giants Tigres.

The forward struggled to establish a place in the first-team, however, despite enjoying a superb loan spell with top-flight rivals BUAP as a 20 year old, scoring 17 goals in 28 league games

Quinones really made his name after moving to Atlas in a permanent move in 2021, and helped them to win the 2021 Apertura, 2022 Clausura, and the Campeon de Campeones in 2022.

He was awarded a fleet of individual awards for his efforts in that 2021/22 campaign, earning a place in Liga MX all-star team and being named as the best attacking midfielder in the division.

That earned Quoinones another move to yet another Mexican club, América, where the forward was again instrumental in bringing silverware to the club in an exact repeat of his triumphs at Atlas - taking his total to six.

By then Quinones had spent enough time in the country to gain Mexican citizenship, allowing him to be called up for his international debut in 2023.

Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah came knocking in summer 2024, securing Quinones' signature for a reported $16m (£12m) transfer fee.

Quinones was in sensational form in front of goal last season, scoring in excess of a goal per game (33 in 31 in the league).

That put the 29 year old top of the Pro League goalscorer table come the end of the campaign, with three hat-tricks across the season helping him to fend off Ivan Toney and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the golden boot.

As such, anybody familiar with Quinones' game would have been unsurprised to see him score the first goal of the tournament as Mexico saw off South Africa 2-0.

Quinones has since supplemented that with another group stage goal against the Czech Republic and the opener in Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 32.

Now, he has England firmly in his sights.
