Poyet named new Brighton manager

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gustavo Poyet has been named Brighton & Hove Albion manager until the end of next season.

The 41-year-old Uruguayan has been away from the the coaching scene since leaving Spurs in October 2008 as Juande Ramos' assistant at White Hart Lane.

He will be assisted at the Withdean Stadium side by former Spurs defender Mauricio Taricco, who made 158 league appearances for Tottenham from 1999-2004.

The Seagulls are currently 20th in the third-tier of English football - one place above the relegation zone - having won just three of their 15 league games in 2009/10.

Former manager Russell Slade was dismissed earlier this month. "Gus is one of the best up-and-coming young coaches in this country and we are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management," Brighton chairman Tony Bloom told the club website.
