Allardyce: Lose the pounds to gain some points

Weight-watching Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce has told his players they have to shed some pounds if they are to successfully avoid relegation this season. The former Bolton and Newcastle boss takes his side to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on Wednesday night, with a draw in west London good enough to steer Rovers back out of the drop-zone. And Allardyce, who has previously singled out Benni McCarthy over his weight, now fears other members of the squad may be carrying a little too much on board. “I’m not surprised that not all the players are in perfect shape, and it isn’t just Benni who has to drop body fat, it is just because of his name that it’s noticed,” he told The Sun. “We need to get a little bit more body fat off him [McCarthy], so he can be more mobile, and hopefully he’ll score more goals. ”It’s all about controlling the diets, the sort of foods they eat and when they eat them.

"The hard thing is that most players today, like most kids, are being brought up on sugars they shouldn’t be, and those sugars are addictive.”
