Torres: Valencia duo key to league glory

Rafael Benitez's side ran eventual winners Manchester United close, but not close enough in 2008/09, finishing four points behind Sir Alex Ferguson's charges despite leading the standings for long periods.

Many of the Merseysiders' faithful believe the Anfield outfit would have successfully wrestled the title away from their arch rivals had Torres not missed large parts of the season through injury, with the ex-Atletico Madrid man netting 14 goals in the 24 league games he featured in.

And 'El Nino' - as well as targeting an injury-free campaign in 2009/10 - is hopeful that Benitez can lure the star Spanish twosome from his former club to help Liverpool usurp the Red Devils and win a 19th domestic league crown.

The pair have long been linked with moves away from the Mestalla with Valencia having suffered severe financial problems.

Villa netted twice on the final day of the la Liga season on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao to take his league tally to 28.

“Villa and Silva would complement Liverpool greatly,” Torres told Marca.

"It is difficult to say which league is better, but the Premiership is more competitive because the British are becoming stronger and players are coming to England."
