The former Japan coach was dubbed the 'White Witch Doctor' after successful spells in Africa with Nigeria, Burkina Faso, South Africa and Ivory Coast among others teams.
The 54-year-old led Japan to the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup as co-hosts with South Korea. He was linked recently with the job of coaching North Korea at the World Cup.
Ivory Coast, drawn with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea at the World Cup, sacked Bosnian coach Vahid Halilhodzic last month after failing to reach the African Nations Cup semi-finals.
Beaten 2-0 by South Korea in London last week, Ivory Coast have also been linked with Guus Hiddink as a short-term fix for this year's World Cup finals in South Africa.
The Dutchman is leaving his job as Russia coach in June to take charge of Turkey in August.
