Vermaelen: I know nothing of Arsenal deal

Reported Arsenal target Thomas Vermaelen insists he knows nothing of any deal with the Emirates Stadium outfit, despite speculation suggesting otherwise.

The 23-year-old has made more than 80 league appearances for the Dutch giants since joining in 2003 - scoring against Aston Villa in last season's UEFA Cup - and has established himself as one of the most highly-rated stoppers in the Eredivisie.

His form has led to rumours linking his name with a possible move to North London during the close season, with the Gunners' faithful keen on manager Arsene Wenger to sign several experienced heads to compliment their vast array of talented youngsters.

However, despite reports that a £10 million move has been agreed, Vermaelen - who has made 21 outings for Belgium - is keeping quiet.

“Officially I still know nothing,” he told De Standaard.

“I leave everything to my agent. Personally I have no voice.”

As well as Vermaelen, the Gunners have been linked with Fulham stopper Brede Hangeland and Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini as Wenger attempts to bolster his back-line ahead of the new season.
