It's possible to lose the first group game of the World Cup and still go through. Heck, a couple of teams have even gone on to win the whole thing.

That's unlikely to be the picture lurking undiscovered beneath World Cup 2026 for Turkey and Paraguay, but their respective managers will be making the point that all is not lost.

Turkey vs Paraguay: key information

The two defeated teams from the first round of Group D matches are up against it, however.

There's a case to be made that this is the most winnable fixture for them both, given the emphatic nature of the wins for Australia and the United States in the previous games.

Among the pre-tournament dark horses, Turkey will start as favourites but need their gaggle of talented youngsters – Real Madrid's Arda Guler among them – to come to the North American party.

Turkey vs Paraguay: World Cup 2026 Preview

If you're looking for the World Cup 2026 match with the lowest UK television ratings, you might just have found it.

There's plenty to be intrigued about in this match and much to enjoy, but it's perfectly pitched between staying up late and getting up early. It's one for the committed – or those with six-month-old children – to say the least.

Jeopardy isn't in short supply, though, and there's every chance it produces a tremendous highlights package to enjoy with breakfast at a more civilised hour.

Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro will have been disappointed at his side's porous defensive display in losing 4-1 to the co-hosts, while opposite number Vincenzo Montella had a problem at the other end in a frustrating 90 minutes against Australia.

Turkey lost their first game 2-0 despite having nearly all of the ball and 30 shots, eight of which were on target. If you don't take your chances – and/or come up against an inspired Patrick Beach – that's what Watford forward Nestory Irankunda can do to you.

Qualifying from the group is possible for teams that lose the first match. It's very unlikely for teams that lose the first two. With the group's top two teams next up for these two, the stakes in California are high.
