Metzelder: Real unlikely to extend contract
MADRID - Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder does not expect his contract to be extended when it runs out at the end of the season and is downbeat about his chances of playing for Germany at next year's World Cup.
"All us players are optimistic but I am also realistic and I don't think the club will renew (my contract)," Metzelder, who joined Real from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2007, told a news conference on Tuesday.
"About the World Cup, I don't often speak to the coach (Joachim Low) and so I don't think he is really counting on me," added the 29-year-old, who last played for Germany in the final of Euro 2008.
Metzelder said he was unlikely to leave Real in the January transfer window because German clubs would be reluctant to pay a fee for a player who was set to become a free agent five months later.
