Gunners leading chase for Swiss starlet

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that highly-rated Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta is the subject of interest from Premier League clubs. The 23-year-old is believed to have been a target of Portsmouth earlier in the season, with Arsenal the latest club thought to be interested in securing his services in the summer.

"There are enquiries for Tranquillo all the time and we have been talking about this with him," Leverkusen sporting manager Michael Reschke told Express, adding that the Gunners had made contact with Bayer about the player.

"We are always in touch with Tranquillo and are attempting to extend his deal."

Barnetta, who has made more than 100 league appearances for Bayer and won 37 caps for his country, still has 18 months remaining on his current deal and could cost in the region of £12 million, a potential stumbling block for the usually frugal Arsene Wenger.
