In the colours of Real Zaragoza, Chelsea and Tottenham the Uruguayan rippled the net from midfield with the regularity of a striker.
After hanging up this boots Poyet moved into management, taking up right-hand man roles at Swindon Town, Leeds United and Spurs, before he took up the reins at Brighton and Sunderland.
