Medvedev backs Russia World Cup bid

MOSCOW - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev pledged support for his country's bid to host the 2018 World Cup during his meeting with FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Friday.

"Russia is a northern country and it's minus 25 degrees (Celsius) outside," Medvedev told Blatter, referring to the unusually cold temperatures that hit Moscow this week.

"But people still play football even in this kind of weather.

Russia is bidding to stage the 2018 World Cup, or possibly 2022, with other countries, including Australia, England, Japan and the United States.

Football's world governing body FIFA will choose the hosts for both events in December.
