United stewards charged with GBH

Two Manchester United stewards have been charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly pushing a Manchester City fan down a flight of stairs, breaking both of his legs.

The incident took place during United’s thrilling 4-3 victory over their arch-rivals at Old Trafford in September, with Michael Owen snatching all three points for the Red Devils with a last-gasp winner.

City supporter Peter Sweeney claims the assault took place after he was twice caught smoking inside the stadium. Mark Roberts, 46, of George Street, Oldham, and Paul Stringer, 45, of Grange Way, Runcorn, have both been charged by Greater Manchester police. They are due to appear at Trafford Magistrates Court next Monday.
