World Cup 2022: Tite steps down as Brazil coach after penalty heartbreak against Croatia
The pre-tournament favourites were knocked out at the quarter-final stage once again
Tite has stepped down as Brazil’s head coach following their World Cup 2022 quarter-final exit to Croatia on penalties.
The Selecao were eliminated in a shoot-out after regulation time finished goalless and extra time ended 1-1, Bruno Petkovic responding to a Neymar opener.
"It is very difficult," said Tite.
"The cycle ended and I said that one and a half years ago. I needed to have the full cycle and now I have the full cycle and have followed the moments."
Tite took charge of the Brazil team in 2016 and his side were pre-tournament favourites, heading to Qatar as the No.1 ranked team in the world by FIFA and on the back of an unbeaten qualifying campaign.
The 61-year-old said in February that he intended to step down from the role after World Cup 2022.
He led Brazil to the 2019 Copa America title, but Friday’s shock defeat to Croatia marked a second consecutive quarter-final exit for him at the World Cup.

Brazil played their best football at the tournament in the first half of their 4-1 thumping of South Korea in the last 16, scoring all four goals before the break.
But they were unable to break down Croatia until Neymar converted a superbly worked goal on the brink of half time in extra time.
Croatia had rarely threatened a goal until Petkovic fired home the leveller with three minutes to go, and Rodrygo and Marquinhos failed to convert in the penalty shoot-out to seal Brazil’s fate.
